Escape the Mille, 1927 – 2017 Supporting a 1955 Porsche Speedster with Audi RS4

The Mille Miglia is a mobile showcase of car history. Contrary to any Concours d’Elegance is an itinerant museum where cars are driven, most of the time like they should, through a good portion of Italy.

The Brescia-Roma-Brescia race, with its edition first held in 1927, has celebrated its 90th anniversary. With the first edition won by Brescia’s own O.M. Brand of fast and sporting automobiles, the Mille has been one of Italy’s most renown car events since forever.

With more than 450 cars running a regularity race through some of the Nation’s most beautiful towns and landscapes, this event is better than Christmas time. Imagine a wild ride of Ferraris, Jaguars, Alfa Romeos, Bugattis and much more, all running like they should. Definitely what us petrolheads love to see and witness and if we are lucky enough, to follow.

This year, to celebrate the 90th anniversary we followed a 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster, with race number #391 with our trusty Audi RS4 throughout the entire event.

No big surprises as the Porsche ran great for the whole duration of the event and in most, than one occasion gave the RS4 more than a headache: old is gold and massive horsepower cannot sometimes cope with the pace of an old lady. It might seem impossible, an air-cooled flat four being better than a 4 liter V8 from a supercar and four wheel drive.

Regularity could not just see the right synonym with “fun” as it is not normally associated with speed: yet the timing set for each stage will allow you to enjoy yourself as much as you would like in any other “speed” event.

Arriving at the end of 4 days of constant, non-stop driving is tough, but ultimately very rewarding. While the RS4 is a certain bet that it will make it to the end, it is not so sure for an old car like the Porsche: this Mille was a testament to the great quality of Stuttgart finest.
